On Saturday 25th May 2013 Riviera ARC took part in Zoos on the Air (ZOTA) by running the special event station GB4ZOO at Paignton Zoo.
Zoos on the Air aims to raise awareness of wildlife conservation through the use of amateur radio. The ZOTA event is timed to coincide with British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA)’s Love Your Zoo Week which runs from Saturday, May 25th to Friday, May 31st.
The QSL card shows Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), Mali, and her daughter who was born in April 2013.
Although the weather was lovely, the radio conditions were less than favourable and it was not possible to contact many Inter-G (UK) stations but several European countries were worked.
This event marked the second collaboration with Paignton Zoo, one of Britain’s leading conservation charities, as Riviera ARC operated the first ever ham radio station at the zoo at Easter to mark the 90th anniversary of its opening.
